Clethra is a genus within the Clethraceae family, native to tropical regions of Asia and north and south America. The genus was first described by Carl Linnaeus, a famous Swedish botanist in 1753.
Clethra are evergreen or deciduous trees or shrubs that are native to swampy and wet areas. They produce attractive bark and glossy green foliage. Scented, bell-shaped flowers bloom in panicles, that are preceded by brown seed capsules, creating an unusual shrub with a range of visual attributes during summer.
