Citrus is genus within the Rutaceae family. Citrus plants and trees have been cultivated across the world for hundreds of years, causing discrepancies on their origin. In 310 B.C. the first member of the citrus family was introduced to Europe. A tile floor mosaic found in a Roman villa specifies that lemons and limes were evident in Italy. Another mosaic in Rome, dated to 330 A.D. indicates that, at least in Italy, oranges and lemons were grown. It is now known that the sweet orange had been grown for many centuries in China, reaching an advanced level of cultivation before it was recognized in Europe.
Citrus are usually evergreen shrubs or trees with simple, leathery and often fragrant foliage with small and scented, star-shaped blooms. These delicate specimens will then produce voluptuous juicy fruits which can be used for a variety of purposes. As Citrus are tender, they are best suited as patio and container plants where they can be easily transported when cold weather and frost become imminent.
