Cheilanthes is a genus of around 180 species of ferns in the Pteridaceae family and are native to tropical and temperate areas of the world, often found growing in rocky regions, in crevices and on cliffs. The name Cheilanthes comes from Greek words meaning 'lip' and 'flower' and so has the common name lip fern.
Cheilanthes are usually evergreen ferns that produce small fronds in clumps on shiny stems. They are well-suited to planting in containers and post or in a gravel or rock garden, due to their natural habitats.
