Cercis

History and Origin:

Cercis is a genus within the Cercidoideae family, native to temperate regions. The word Cercis derives from the Greek word ‘kerkis’ meaning Weaver’s shuttle.

About:

Cercis are bushy deciduous shrubs or small trees that fashion an abundance of clustered and nectar filled pea-shaped flowers in the summer followed by flattened, rich purple pods that are set upon heart-shaped leaves. The coloured leaves are bronzed from a young age and transform to yellow tones during the autumn. These are highly popular with a range of wildlife and so expect to see a flurry of bees and butterflies when in flower.
