Cercidiphyllum is a genus within the Cercidiphyllaceae family, native to Japan and China. They are more commonly referred to as ‘Katsura’. This is the name is predominantly used in Japan where it is imbedded in folklore. Fossil records will date these trees back 5-23 million years ago where they inhabited parts of Europe and western north America.
Cercidiphyllum are a species of large deciduous tree that fashion elliptical leaves, with bronze colourings when young, transforming into red and orange autumnal colourings during the autumn. As winter approaches some varieties release aromatic scents of burnt sugar and toffee apples - the perfect accompanying scent to coincide with the season.
