Cephalanthus is a genus of 6 flowering species in the Rubiaceae family, native to eastern USA and Canada. They are most commonly known as buttonbushes. The genus was named by the famous Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus in 1753. The name is derived from the Ancient Greek words kephalos, meaning "head" and anthos meaning "flower."
Cephalanthus are deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs with dark red stems and bright-green foliage. Intriguing spherical and spike-like flowers appear in clusters throughout spring and summer. Cephalanthus are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard, cottage and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Cephalanthus grow to an approximate height and spread of 2.5m (8’).
