Calycanthus is a genus within the Calycanthaceae family, native to North America. It was first noted by Mark Catesby, a British naturalist in 1732. He described the scented bark that closely resembled the scent of cinnamon. It was later introduced to England in 1756. They are commonly known as ‘sweetshrub’ or ‘carolina all spice’.
Calycanthus are deciduous shrubs with water-lily like blooms and thick slender stems that flourish throughout summer. The flowers often omit a rich fruity fragrance, often used as an ingredient in potpourri.
