History and Origin:

Bidens is a genus of plants within the Aster family and are mostly native to America, Africa and Polynesia with some species also being native to Asia and Europe. They are more commonly known as tickseed or beggarticks which refer to the fruits of the plant which are spiky and barbed. Their Latin name Bidens also refers to their barbed fruits, as is comes from the Latin 'bis', meaning two and 'dens', meaning tooth.

Bidens can be either annuals or perennials with daisy-like flowerheads that bloom in summer/autumn. They are well-suited as a bedding plant as well as being planted in containers and baskets.
