Begonia is a genus within the Begoniaceae family that containers over 1700 different species. They are native to tropical and sub-tropical regions of South America and Africa. Begonias were named by naturalist Charles Plumier in honour of Michel Begon, a French governor and politician during the 17th and early 18th century.
Begonia are annuals, evergreen or deciduous perennials or shrubs grown for their distinctive colourful blooms and voluptuous foliage. They are generally seen in containers or hanging baskets, depending on the habit of each variety.
