Astrantia is a genus from the Apiaceae family, native to central, southern and eastern Europe. The botanical name is believed to have originated from either the Latin word ‘Aster’ or Greek word ‘Astra’, meaning star, appropriately named to represent their flower shape. The common name for Astrantia is ‘Masterwort’.
Astrantia are herbaceous perennials with long, wiry stems, palmately lobed foliage and compact clusters of firework-like flowers that are produced in a wide range of colours, including white, pink and deep red.
