Alcea is a genus of around 60 species within the family Malvaceae. Alcea are more commonly known as the ‘Hollyhock’ and are native to southern Europe, the middle east and central Asia. The common hollyhock was introduced to Europe during the 15th century by William Turner, a British herbalist who name is ‘Holyoke’.
Alcea are biennials or short-lived perennials that produce outstanding clusters of blooms throughout summer. Alcea are best suited to flower beds and borders within a cottage, informal or coastal garden setting.
