Acer are a woody plant, native to Japan, China, eastern Mongolia and southeast Russia. They are more commonly referred to as the Japanese or Palmate maple. Acer have been cultivated in Japan for hundreds of years with the first specimen being introduced to the UK in 1820. The species name ‘palmatum’ was founded by Swedish botanist Carl Peter Thunberg whilst on a trip to Japan during the late 18th century.
Acer palmatum are small deciduous trees that are synonymous with oriental gardens. They are famous for their foliage shape and colour, matching autumnal shades in abundance. They create desired architecture and are best grown in an area where they can reach optimum height and spread.
