Baby pink with speckled yellow throats, the flowers of Alstroemeria Duc d’Anjou ‘Pierre’ are a wonderfully easy and long-lasting source of colour for a pastel scheme. Though exotic-looking, alstroemeria is far hardier than it looks and will thrive easily in most UK gardens. It is notable for an exceptionally long lifespan, providing decades of bright, bold colour which spans summer into autumn, demanding very little attention other than some deadheading. We love seeing the Alstroemeria Duc d’Anjou ‘Pierre’ towards the front of a cottage garden style border with other soft pinks, purples, and whites. Plant with roses, perovskia and delphiniums for a burgeoning and impactful display. Alstroemeria make fabulous cut flowers too and are prized by florists for their impressive vase life of two to three weeks. ‘Pull’ stems from the base of the plant rather than cutting as this encourages further stems and avoids damage to the crown. For best results grow in full sun or partial shade in any well-draining soil. We have also found alstroemeria to grow very well in a container. A hardy, herbaceous perennial which reaches a height and spread of 50cm. RHS rating of H5, so hardy down to -15C.
